It may come as a surprise from a beauty and skincare blogger, but I’m actually quite the minimalist at heart. As a twenty-one year old college student, I don’t really have a choice! The older I get, the more I realize how few essentials great skincare and a polished look actually requires. I’ve cut out a lot of products as I go along, but there’s one I never believed in from the beginning: makeup primer. With moisturizer and long-wearing makeup, it always seemed to me that primer was just another way for makeup companies to make money off of unsuspecting customers.
I decided to suspend my disbelief and take the plunge when I saw that natural skincare company Reviva Labs sells a Makeup Primer. Readers of my blog know that I’m constantly raving about the consistent results I see with Reviva Labs products. Blog readers also know that Reviva Labs is not a cosmetics company, so their motivation for selling such a product are definitely not the same as companies that sell makeup. My curiosity enticed me to try the Reviva Labs Makeup Primer, and, well, I’m now a believer.
Like I said, I’m a college student, so my days are long and my skin takes a beating. My first class is at 8 AM, and after a day in classes and in the lab, I’m ready to go out with my friends. My makeup is done by 9:30, and sometimes we don’t get back until 3 AM. In an ideal world, I would only have to apply makeup twice on such a day: once in the morning for my day look and once at night for a more dramatic appearance. In reality, a perfect look would require constant touch-ups throughout the day, something I simply don’t have time for. With Reviva Labs Makeup Primer at my fingertips, I decided to try and make the ideal the new reality.
Because my skin is naturally oily and olive oil is an ingredient in the primer, I didn’t moisturize after washing my face. After applying my acne medications, I went straight to the applying the primer. The first thing I was stuck by when I used Reviva Labs Makeup Primer was its velvety texture. As recommended, I dabbed a drop on my forehead, each cheek, and on my jaw line. I often moisturize with olive oil, so I’m used to smooth skin, but it’s never felt anything like it did with the Reviva Labs Makeup Primer on it. I felt like my skin was a canvas for the first time. Not only did it make applying makeup far more enjoyable, I was shocked at how smoothly the liquid concealer and liquid foundation went over my skin. My pores are usually rather noticeable, but the primer concealed them wonderfully. The final product was flawless. I also used the primer that had been leftover on my fingertips to prime my eyes. I was careful to use a very small amount, which ended up yielding great results The colors were more vibrant than I have ever seen them, and the primer helped them blend smoothly.
Because the primer seems a bit oily at first due to its gel-like consistency, I was afraid that shine control would be a problem with my oily face. Not so. Just as Reviva Labs claims, the primer did an incredible job with oil control. I made it through two parties, three bars, two hours of heavy dancing, light sweat, and a few adult beverages before I made my way home. The end result? My makeup–which usually wears off by one in the morning–looked as flawless at 3:30 AM as when I had put it on at 9:00 PM!
I usually am not in a position to share products I try due to their nature. However, due to the instant results available from a product like Reviva Labs Makeup Primer, I was happy to share with my roommate when she asked how it worked. I didn’t tell her I was reviewing the product or my history with Reviva Labs; I figured I would let the primer speak for itself. My roommate wasn’t a fan of the texture of the primer at first; I think it was matter of how shocking it is to feel your skin so smooth for the first time. She must have gotten over that quickly, because the next time we went out, she ended up asking me if she could use the primer again! She even commented after a spring break apart that she hated not being able to use the primer before a night out. I honestly love sharing it because a little goes a long way: we’ve barely made a dent in the bottle.
At $19.50, you won’t find many other primers on the market cheaper than Reviva Labs Makeup Primer. If you do, there’s simply no way it can work as well as this natural product. I can honestly say that I now feel like I’m wasting my money when I don’t wear this makeup primer: it makes drugstore foundation look expensive, it makes it last twice as long, and it heightens the color and texture of my Mac eye shadow to new levels.
